The next day, just beyond the Telephone Creek checkpoint, we passed another team. They were hung up on the side of a slippery glacier.

What happened to you? I asked one of the dogs.

Reindeer! she said. Wouldn’t you just know it? We took off after them and wound up getting all tangled up for our trouble.

After Sepp helped sort out the lines, we left them and went on ahead. I lifted my nose to the wind. There was the sweet smell of reindeer! A nice big herd. Probably the same ones that had lured those dogs onto the glacier.

Let’s go! I said to the team, and I took off at a run. We led Sepp and his sled on a merry chase that morning, up hills and flying off ledges, the sled banging behind us. We didn’t care. Sepp didn’t, either, so long as we went fast and stayed on the trail and didn’t bog down. But it didn’t last. Finally, we got twisted up in a thicket of willows, and Sepp had to get out and help us. It took him a mighty long time to work us free. By the time we were lined up again, the reindeer scent had faded, which was too bad. But the good news was that we had plenty of energy left—and now there was only one team ahead of us.
